National Financial Literacy Challenge

Charles Schwab is not only an investment broker.  There are many tools for education on it’s website, and recently I have found the Company to be very financial literacy-friendly.  Schwab Moneywise is a simple, straightforward solution to financial education.  It is one that I would actually like to learn more about and to read on a more consistent basis.  MoneyWise has the following basic categories:  Money Basics, Life Events, News & Views, Tools & Resources, and Teachers & Volunteers.  WIthin the Teachers & Volunteers section of its website, Schwab discusses ideas for the classroom, the national challenge for teens, and even has a pop quiz for you to test your own financial literacy knowledge.  The Charles Schwab Foundation recently announced 22 winners of the National Financial Literacy Challenge who scored perfectly on on the 2008 Challenge.  Apparently, more than 75,000 high school students throughout the country took the exam, and was a 35-question test of personal finance knowledge which was administered by the US Department of Treasury.  The foundation also awarded $1,000 scholarships to the winners and the schools or organizations who sponsored the individuals in their education endeavors.

This is exactly what I want to see more of in this country.  How come this is not more publicized in the media?  This is a very citizen-friendly task that Schwab has undertaken, one that I applaud greatly.  I am looking forward to taking the online Pop Quiz to see how I fair.

You will also see in the Teachers & Volunteers section of the website, that there are presentations to be used to teaching basic money management skills to our youth of this country that are free to anyone to use.
